On pets

A reader asks Matt whether he has a pet.

Matt responds:

Back when we had a normal life—as normal as can be living over a funeral home—we had Great Danes:  huge rambling beasts that would slobber all over you but love you to death.  I didn’t take them out for a walk; they took me out on a walk!

If you’re looking for true, everlasting love, buy a dog, especially in business.  It’d be good to have them around the office.  I’m a great animal lover.  Sadly, one of the down points of our travel and routine of being more or less nomads, is that we wouldn’t be able to trudge from place to place with a pet with us.

I think a lot about the nomadic tribes.  In fact, I have one of the nomadic chests that comes apart very easily.  It’s hand-carved and has pegs to put it together.  I love the nomadic life.  I have the Wanderlust.  I’m always searching for something, and I always find it where I am.  But then, because my attention span is like a child’s, I start looking for something else to entertain me and challenge me.  So off again we go!

We don’t bring the herd with us anymore.  We go on airplanes.  I don’t think they would appreciate me bringing a 200-pound Great Dane onto the plane and into the hotel room.  So put me in the “I love dogs” column, or cats, or anything else that will love me back.  We had a goat once.  I have a couple wood cows on my farm.  And I love the cows and horses and foxes in Ireland.

Thanks for your question,
Matt
