In related news, one of our readers, Marilou Purpura, recently wrote in about the Umbrellas for Peace project that Matt conducted earlier in the month in Lemont, Illinois.
Matt appreciated Marilou’s post and relates this response:
Marilou, the folks from Lemont were very gracious and were a great example of a community that embraced our Umbrella Project!
I spent the afternoon out there, and it was delightful. We had over a thousand young people, and the response of the adult population, the city officials, the police, and everybody involved, was something to behold!
When people come together to embrace the principles of the umbrella, we know that the New Los Alamos can’t be far behind.
These are the days I live for. They give me the power and the energy for these old, 77-year-old legs to dance till I almost fall over. Thank God I had not only an umbrella with me but a cane! When it was over, I went home and had a 2 and ½ hour nap, got up, had dinner, and went to bed, thrilled at having had such a joyful day.
I say to everyone: You made an old man’s day fabulous! I can’t think of anything I’d rather do than scream and holler and dance with a bunch of children, escorted by their parents. I would prescribe it to anybody who wants to really get up and do something.
As I see yellow ribbons tied on trees, I understand that that’s a call for people who are asking, “What can I do?” I have some simple advice: Paint an umbrella, and have a parade! I can guarantee you won’t have a better day. You’ll feel good about yourself, your world, and your community.
Thanks again for inviting me. I was honored to be there!
Matt
