...notes: “Let's say the Educators could somehow prove they are right: There is no hope, and we should all just give up now, keel over and die... Would we? Would you?”
Matt responds:

Barry, you’re absolutely right.
A very simplistic synthesis of your thoughts would be: “Hope springs eternal. So it is written, and so it will be done.”
I believe when the final book is written, the dreamers will be the ones that took a realistic look at the past and then shaped the future.
To be a dreamer is to venture into the area of prophesy—with hesitation but with the knowledge that dreams are possible, even the so-called “impossible dreams.”
When we look at the steady march towards humanity, we have a lot in front of us, but unless we can dream and acknowledge that we are up to the task—if we don’t have that philosophy—then defeat becomes self-fulfilling.
So hurray for all the dreamers! We’ll all have a parade! I don’t think we’ll all be singing as we fall off the cliff; I think if we thought we could fly, we would fly off the cliff!
So start growing your wings, and away we go!
