Enjoying painting with all the senses

Dear bloggers,

Recently one of our readers commented that all light and therefore all paintings are really vested in song, and that all things should be enjoyed and experienced by all the senses.

I agree with that wholeheartedly!

I encourage people to look at my paintings, smell them, touch them, walk by them, stare at them, and if I had my way, and they were indestructible, kick them, stand on them, and punch them, so that you could feel all the power coming from the paint, the direction, the vibrations, calling out the song, the wisdom, the profanity that I feel they bring to this dimension.

When I had my show at the Marble Palace of the State Russian Museum, I announced that everyone was invited to touch the paintings.  The curators were appalled!  You’d have thought I’d started the next Russian Revolution!  It was like a very loud and misplaced fart in a great cathedral!

I announced that as long as I was there, I gave them special dispensation to feel the paintings.

Everybody had a great time.  I don’t know this for sure, but it might have been the first time people were allowed to legally touch a painting at the State Russian Museum.

So much for seduction of the paintings!

Matt

Matt, your painting certainly seems to engage all the senses, most of all sight of course, but also touch. Not being a painter, I'm not sure how your creative process works, but do you paint primarily by sight, or are there other senses that guide you? Do you feel you would still be able to paint if you went blind, or is it too much dependent on the sense of sight? Thanks for the great art and neat thoughts about life, love, and all the things that make the world go round!
